Preparing to Select, Adopt, and Implement New Science Curricula
Developed for:
Teams of educators from the same institution (district or school) in order to share their thoughts on the planning tasks and the planning tools they receive.
Format:
A two-day workshop (six hours per day).
Goal:
To acquire tools and strategies for seven critical components of the process for changing the curriculum in a school or district.
Content:
Participants will:
- Learn the seven components of a plan of action for change, including the focus questions and necessary tasks related to each component.
- Obtain and preview tools to use in planning each component of the plan.
Features:
The workshop will provide opportunities for participants to investigate:
- Setting Goals: Implementation complexities, planning and organizing for change, policy considerations.
- Leadership: Formation of a leadership team, identification of roles and responsibilities, keeping people “in the loop.”
- Curriculum: Criteria for previewing materials, considerations for alignment with standards and assessments.
- Professional Development: Assessment of needs and wants, program design, identification of internal and external providers.
- Assessing and Evaluating the Program Status: Data sources, self-study, ongoing review.
- Community and Partnerships: Identification of needs and resources, engaging and meeting with partners.
- Financial Considerations: Entitlement and discretionary sources, budget review, earmarking for purchase of materials and professional development.
Participants will receive the following:
- Concept maps and planning organizers for goal setting.
- Planning issues worksheets, classroom visitation guides, leadership team development resources, teacher leader’s selection guide for leadership.
- Curriculum evaluation tools, curriculum profiles, curriculum evaluation reports.
- Strategies to use during the professional development design process, including teacher-survey instruments.
- Planning questionnaires and surveys for assessing and evaluating.
- Community-based organization checklist and questionnaire, “making the case” presentations, parent involvement questionnaire, strategies for engaging institutions of higher education.
- Checklists, worksheets for financial matters.
